trans saints exist / St. Marinos the Monk - unisex oversized t-shirt

St. Marinos is a Christian saint who probably lived around the 5th century.
While assigned female at birth, Marinos lived as a monk alongside his father after his mother died. Years after his father had passed… the monks were sent on a long journey and had to sleep at an inn. Later on, the inn-keeper’s daughter turned out to be pregnant, and in order to conceal her true lover’s identity, she said Marinos was the father. Marinos was kicked out of the monastery for “his sins” (though he had no blame).

Once the child was born, Marinos raised him as his own for ten years. In complete exile, as a single father. Marinos’ peers, the monks, convinced the abbot to allow Marinos to return; he accepted but he also imposed heavy penalties upon Marinos, who was to perform hard labour in cooking, cleaning and carrying water in addition to regular monastic duties and caring for the child.

Marinos died at age forty after a quick but deadly illness. When cleaning the body, the monks realized that it was impossible for Marinos to have been the child’s father. The monks informed the abbot, who came to Marinos’ side and wept bitterly for the wrongs done. As you can see, I used he/him pronouns when talking about St. Marinos. This is not me “placing today’s conceptions of gender on a 5th century figure”, but valuing and treasuring the meaning St. Marinos has to trans Christians.

Trans people are God’s children. Trans people are made to the image and likelihood of God. Trans lives are sacred and holy.
