Many of us have spent years on the receiving end of religious messaging that told us we must transcend ourselves to be united with God; that we must rise above ourselves to reach God, who is somewhere ambiguously “out there.”
Teresa calls bullshit.
“It is very important not to think of the soul as dark,” she wrote. “What a shame that, through our own unconsciousness, we do not know ourselves! We don’t understand the great secrets hidden inside of us.”
Teresa taught that unity with God is not found by laboring up a ladder to get to heaven but rather by delving into the deepest mines within ourselves.
Finding God is not an ascent, she would say, but a descent into the depths of our own souls.
