Saint Lucy wearing a variation of traditional Sicilian clothing.

Saint Lucy or Saint Lucia is the patron saint of the blind, illness of the throat, and all martyrs. She was a Christian roman martyr from the fourth century. According to the traditional story, Lucy was born of rich and noble parents about the year 283 AD. Like many of the early martyrs, Lucy had consecrated her virginity to God, and she hoped to distribute her dowry to the poor. Her mother wasn’t fond of this idea, so she arranged for a marriage with a wealthy pagan family.

St. Agatha (who I’ve painted before!) appeared to Lucy in a dream. She said that because of Lucy’s faith, her mother’s serious blood disease would be cured. Indeed, it was. Her mother had a change of heart because of this miracle, and called off the marriage.

The groom’s family was furious, especially at the news that the dowry that was once supposed to be theirs was being given to the poor, and they denounced her to the governor of Syracuse. The governor, when he heard she was a Christian, ordered her to burn a sacrifice to the emperor's image. She refused, and as a punishment, she was sentenced “to be defiled in a brothel.” Tradition states that when the guards came to take her away, they could not move her even when they hitched her to a team of oxen. Bundles of wood were then heaped about her and set on fire, but would not burn.

Lucy met her death by the sword thrust into her throat. However, 15th century tales speak of death by eye-gouging. Which is why she’s the patron saint of both throat illness, and illnesses of the eye.

Brave and beloved Saint Lucy, pray for us.
