The Divine Mercy devotion and image began at the hands of a humble Polish nun, Saint Faustina Kowalska. A mystic, she died in 1938 having spoken to Jesus many times in different visions. This is all detailed in her diary.
This diary states that Jesus said to Saint Faustina: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it as My own glory.” (Diary 28)
In this image, two rays stream out of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (One pale, one red. Symbolizing the water and blood that emanated through the Side Wound during the Passion). The whole image is a symbol of charity, forgiveness and love of God, referred to as the “Fountain of Mercy”.
