Chavela Vargas was a lesbian Costa Rican-born Mexican singer who blended ferocity and warmth in her dramatic and revolutionary interpretations of Mexico’s ranchera songs. However, Chavela Vargas defied all gender expectations and norms of women singers at the time. She wore wore pants and a poncho, wore her hair in a single bun or braid, drank heavily, smoked cigars, and performed songs traditionally sung by men, without changing the pronouns. She is remembered for her defiance, her queerness and her unapologetic approach to life.
